This is one of the projects Aidan's dda had him make for his dad. Cute!
This is both the father's day project Aidan's OT had him do, and one of the first projects that involves therapy specifically for LGS. His therapist, when she found out Aidan's full diagnosis, also found out she has two other clients with the same syndrome. She not only contacted the LGS Foundation for information on therapy that would most benefit him, but then started researching the syndrome. I figured she saw what I did. Turns out she researched even more and found out things that are, frankly, very important information for our boys. First, a very specifically sequenced art therapy is the only therapy they've found to have long lasting effects on children with LGS. She started this therapy with him a couple sessions ago. Some of it is cut and paste like what you see above. Then the second thing... she found that not only are children with LGS being misdiagnosed with autism, but their numbers are increasing. And that they have proof the earlier you hit the child with tons of therapy, before the age of 5, the better they fair later. For instance if a child should skip at 7yrs, you want to get them to skip at 5. Because LGS involves lots and lots of major regressions, the earlier the child learns skills, the higher their base is that they always fall back to in a regression... for example, when Aidan regresses, he always reverts back to the skills he already knew before his first regression at 3. So he functions at the level he was at when 2. So that tells us that Jace and Damon need to learn as much, as fast as possible (referring to basic skills like gross and fine motor, language, etc.) before the first major regression hits. I'm still trying to process all of this. In the past few days I feel like I've been not only hit with really emotional stuff, scary stuff, but also incredible information that will bless my boys.
I'm so grateful for the people in our lives that care and do.
(Oh, and the reference to "play on the mat" isn't something like wrestling, it's a train and car rug. :)
