I know my blog has been boring lately. With all the sickness, my life has literally been cleaning up after and trying to feed, sick everybody. I've barely kept up with the basics. It's not over, either, Damon woke up puking yesterday. There is a common denominator in this, and to say I'm not happy with this person and their refusal to wash their hands is an understatement.
But that's not what this post is about.
I got an excited text from one of the boys' therapists a few weeks ago. She'd found some info about how beneficial pure coconut oil was for the metabolic syndrome Aidan was recently tested for. The test results were within normal ranges so I'd ignored the possible diagnosis. But apparently it's much like regular diabetes, just because a one time test shows a normal number doesn't guarantee the person is in the clear. They also tested when he wasn't showing symptoms, and didn't do anything to induce the symptoms. Anyway, as I listened to the video she sent me, I thought, why not try it? The coconut oil has been shown to help with seizures and dementia, even alzheimer's.
I'd experimented before with high fat, with positive results. But the weather had cooled dramatically at the same time. I didn't know what I was looking at, and the diet was difficult to maintain. We just aren't high fat eaters, even though I may look like it. The thing about the coconut oil that gave me a little hope, it's not just fat, it's got legitimate health benefits.
So we bought some and I started making sure he had it in some form, an absolute minimum of two meals a day. Well, it's been over two weeks and I see a significant improvement is his communication, mood, and general health. Hm. I'm not sure what to make of it, but I tell you what, his brothers are getting a daily dose of it now too. :)
Aidan's reading is one thing that has improved with the change too.
I cried with gratitude yesterday, listening to him read with confidence. Things that just two weeks ago, he'd struggle to spit out. I knew he knew the words, just couldn't say it fast enough, then got stuck with the interruptions of the seizures, even if really short... because they cluster.
For this 10 min period, it actually almost flowed seamlessly!!
His therapists reported having excellent sessions with him. They did when I'd added the high fat before too.
I'm worried he will get sick of the taste/smell of it and start refusing it. It has a faint coconut taste, and noticeable smell. But we'll use it until that happens.
I'll take any help for him I can get, no matter how small or temporary.
