Dental surgery for a 5yr old may seem pretty extreme, but in Aidan's case, a very welcome blessing.
There's a few reasons that could be playing a role in our poor little man's not so great teeth. #1 He vomits regularly. This accompanies his seizures, and he's been doing it from day one. Anyone with experience knows regular vomiting eats the protective coating off your teeth and causes tooth decay. #2 Apparently there are some genes that could be playing a part. I don't remember even having cavities until my teens, so the thought of Aidan having 5 didn't even occur to me! Two of them were bad enough to require root canals and crowns, and one of those really probably should have been pulled all together. But at his age, they wanted to at least try to make it for a year without pulling it. We shall see.
So back to why is it necessary? Why not just make him suffer like the rest of us?
Mercy.
Aidan has a major gag reflex, muscle tone weakness, (holding his mouth open for prolonged periods ante-gonna-happen!) and stress/nervous induced seizures. Experience from the MRI shows sedation (they use the same sedation for dentistry as they do to "calm" a child before putting the IV and anetheisia for child MRIs.) actually makes him totally freak out, not calm. They couldn't even get very good x-rays with his check-up visit and the cleaning was nearly impossible. To put him through 3 or more dental visits on partial sedation is pointless torture. For everyone involved.
And to think, the only reason I took him in was because he had a permanent tooth come up behind the baby one. They pulled that too. :) Guess it was a darn good thing that crazy tooth came in the wrong spot!
Jace doesn't have any crazy teeth coming in, he's too young. But he's next. I'm really hoping he inherited my teeth.
Ha. So much for my not having doctor appts for a while wish.
